Abstract

Using the relational database management system Microsoft Access the first version of the information system (IS) for microbial nomenclature and taxonomy Names 1.0 has been developed . The Names IS is intended to handle data on microbial taxa: genera, species, subspecies, strains, etc.

Now the IS contains ca 25000 names of genera, species, and higher levels of prokaryotes, mycelial and yeast fungi, a dictionary of 8500 characteristics, the information on more than 200 culture collecions, ca 3000 bibliographic references, the VKM Catalogue of Microbial Cultures (ca 10000 strains), etc. The total IS is ca 25Mb.

We have included a tree-like presentation of the information in the graphic user interface of the IS. For this purpose, the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications language and ActiveX controls has been used extensively. At present the tree component of the user interface includes:

The Names IS can be used either in a standalone application mode or as a part of other microbiological databases.
