Tutorial T-2. Data Sharing on High Performance Networks. Laurent Lefevre (University of Lyon, France)
Tuesday, January 19, 14:00 - 16:00 (404)
Session Chair: Viacheslav Wolfengagen (Russia)

Laurent Lefevre is an assistant professor of the computer science departement at the University Claude Bernard, Lyon, France. He is currently involved in the High Speed Network and Cooperative Applications research team that is associated to INRIA and LHPC. He received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from the Ecole Normale Superieure Lyon in 1996. His major interests concern cooperative applications, high speed networks, parallel and distributed algorithms and environment for parallel programming. He is involved in many scientific comittees.

Abstract. With the emergence of high performance networks (Myrinet, SCI...), the design of distributed applications for clusters are completly modified. Now a distant access to data is not much more expensive than a local one.
Distributed Shared Memory systems provide a virtual shared space to applications for transparent access to distributed data. An easy and performant management of shared data on clusters seems now possible by using these new kind of networks. But protocols and implementations must be adapted in a similar way than parallel applications developpement was (adapted consistency protocols, update data, shared multimedia data). Moreover new kind of cooperative applications can take benefit from these high performances.
The tutorial will discuss new concepts, systems and implementations of DSM on high performance networks. The tutorial consists of three parts. Part I will introduce DSM systems and all concerning features (consistency, updating, synchronizing...). Part II summarizes a survey on High Performance Networks. Part III focuses on the problem of data sharing on high speed networks and their benefit for distributed and cooperative applications.
